Eterna Jumbo with Calibre 852 from 1940
Generously proportioned for its era, this Eterna from the 1940s measures 36mm in stainless steel, a size that sits close to modern tastes and gives the watch a presence uncommon for the period. The case is closed by a six-notch screw-back and keeps well-defined edges, with the fine marks that come with age.
The original two-tone dial pairs a warm cream centre with a crisp white railroad minute ring. The Arabic numerals, outlined in black, are filled with radium. The syringe hour and minute hands, with their needle-fine tips, contain tritium, while a red seconds hand adds a discreet touch of colour. Deliberately simple and highly legible, the dial has the clear, functional character of a 1940s field watch.
At its core is the manually wound Eterna calibre 852, a 15-jewel in-house movement, smooth in winding and hand-setting.
A characterful 1940s Eterna, large for its time and honest in condition, with a dial that has aged beautifully.
