Rolex Datejust Ref. 1601 “Confetti” Dial from 1970

Introduced in 1959, the reference 1601 stands among the most collectible chapters of the Datejust story, celebrated for its stepped dial architecture and the extraordinary range of dial variations it was produced with, none more coveted than the “Confetti”.

Originally finished as a solid matte black dial, the Confetti configuration is not a factory design but the result of a rare and unpredictable aging process, one that transforms the surface over decades into a constellation of red, blue and green pigments, visible only up close, while shifting toward blue under certain light when viewed at a distance. No two Confetti dials age exactly alike, making each example genuinely one of a kind, and this one, produced in 1970 according to its case, presents in very good condition.

The stainless steel case is fitted with a fluted 18k white gold bezel and its matching Jubilee bracelet, the clasp stamped “1” over “71”, indicating first-quarter 1971 manufacture, a few months after the case itself, fully consistent with Rolex’s production practices of the era.

The hour markers retain their original tritium, while the hands are to be from service replacement from the late 1980s or early 1990s, also finished in tritium.

At its core is the automatic, chronometer-certified calibre 1570, the very foundation of the Datejust’s reputation for precision.
